Everyone’s looking for a few secrets to happiness. Some sort of magic bullet to get happy.

But is there really hidden secrets to happiness?

I think there may be.

I may have even discovered 10 secrets to happiness.

But first off…

It’s not like “the man” is keeping ways to get happy hidden from us.

It’s just that happiness is such a broad topic that trying to find secrets to unlocking it in our lives has almost become taboo.

Personal happiness is a touchy subject.

Is Beer The Secret To Happiness?

Even the question, “What makes you happy?” makes people uncomfortable. If that question is brought up in casual conversation we usually just answer with some sly remark like, “Beer makes me happy. That’s my secret to happiness. Drink more beer”

We answer quickly so that we can avoid any possibility of discovering that we’re actually, much to our surprise, un-happy.

But really this may be the ultimate question; “Are you happy?”

And we’ve got to be brave and have the courage to not only ask the ultimate question but to answer it as well.

The secret to our happiness depends on it.

To discover the secret to happiness for ourselves we’ve got to tap into an honorable honesty that ‘s willing to pierce deeply into our own hearts. A place that we keep guarded from the world and even ourselves..

So maybe we could say that step one in discovering the secret to happiness for ourselves is to ask and honestly answer the ultimate question for ourselves; “Are you happy?” or phrased another way; “Am I happy?”

And if we answered “No. I’m not happy.”, then the next question could be, “Why not?”

  • Is your job a real downer?
  • Are you in debt?
  • Are you stressed out or worried about something?

Have the strength to ask yourself these questions. The secret to happiness is definitely not ignorance. Even Socrates said that, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

And I want you to be living a good life. A life filled with happiness and joy.

Sometimes it’s easiest to use the contrast of what’s making us unhappy so that we can discover what we can do to help transform that to happiness.

And if we answered, “Yes. I’m happy.”, then the next question could be, “What makes you happy.”

And sometimes the right answer to uncovering the secret to happiness for ourselves is just to do more of the things that are making us happy.

Joseph Campbell, said that the secret to happiness and a happy life was to, “Follow your bliss.”

Is Silence The Secret To Happiness?

So far we’ve just looked at externals. Things that we can do outside of ourselves to ensure our happiness. But is this really enough to reveal and uncover happiness in our lives?

Move some pieces of our lives around and then the secret of happiness will appear? Like discovering the combination to a safe hidden within the wall. And once we know just the right numbers all the treasures inside will be ours.

Sort of…

Sometimes all it takes is just a couple of external changes. Move this. Change that. And stop doing this completely. Then presto we’re happy again.

But more often than not, unless we get down to the root causes of our unhappiness, no amount of external manipulation will ever help us.

So what are we supposed to do then? Hunt down the nearest psychotherapist that we can find?

If you really feel compelled to then I say sure.

But before that there may be an easier way to reveal the secret of happiness in your life.

You can enjoy the silence.

Last year I remember reading a report of happiness research being done on Tibetan monks. They had poked, prodded and hooked these men up to electrodes in order to study their brainwaves in relation to happiness and meditation.

After the data was in, one of the senior mediators results were astonishing. So much so that the researches had never seen anything like it. They said that this monk had to be.”…the happiest man on the planet.”

Meditation gives us a little distance from our lives.

It lets us begin to touch the deep peace and joy that is alive within us.

The busy-ness of life and our minds is a shield that stops us from perceiving the happiness that is inherent within each and every one of us.

So simple meditation techniques can and will allow us to react to life responsibly. We’ll begin to have our lives become rooted in happiness.

Because we’ve touched the source of it.

A place that reside within.

Unmoved by the world outside of us.

The Secrets To Happiness Revealed

So we’ve covered a lot of ground here in regards to happiness. Looking at both internal and external factors of happiness.

But we’re busy people so is there any easy things that we can do right now to help us with our happiness?

  1. Surround yourself with good friends and family.
  2. Be optimistic. Hope for the best.
  3. Don’t take life so seriously.
  4. Do things you enjoy.
  5. Try to have your work be your passion.
  6. Laugh more.
  7. Take time out for yourself.
  8. Take care of your body.
  9. Meditate.
  10. Forgive.

  1. I’ve been reading through your happiness series…great job. Lots of good information and suggestions. Let me add that from my experience and work I think one of the fundamental keys to happiness lies in self-appreciation, self-acceptance and self-love. Once you have this mighty “trio” in place, you have a solid foundation to move out in the world and follow your bliss.
