How To Be Happy Through The Power of Sharing
We all know someone like this. Maybe it’s you. But when this person shows up in your life you know it.
Because you feel happy.
For me this magical and powerful person’s name is Bill.
Bill works two jobs. One of them in an Aids care facility.
And anyone who meets him will feel his resonant joy, love and happiness.
So what’s Bill’s secret to being happy?
I think Norman MacEwan summed it up perfectly when he said, “Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
And Bill is a giver.
Be it a warm smile, a kind word, or a quick laugh.
He shines with happiness and everyone around him is always leaves a little bit happier.
So how can you become a Bill for the people in your life?
Well I think there are five keys. Five essential happiness secrets that Bill has taught me.
5 Keys To Being Happy
- Be Interested In Other People:
Bill rarely talks about himself. But he’s always at the center of a good conversation. How? By being interested in other people. He’s always asking how I am. How the kids are. How’s my day going.
- Remember One Thing About Another Person:
It amazes me the things he can remember about my life. But this happiness key ties back into the first one. If you’re truly interested in other people you tend to remember what’s important to them. What their hopes and fears are. What they love. And more importantly what to talk to them about to help them feel special.
- Really Listen:
Bill listens. I mean he really listens. He pours his complete attention on you. He hangs on every word you say. You never get the feeling that he’s going over his grocery list when you’re talking to him.
- Wear Your Heart On Your Sleeve:
When the conversation does turn over to Bill and what’s going on in his life he doesn’t hold back. He shares with courage. Now I don’t think that he tells everyone EVERYTHING. But he will definitely let you know the ins and outs of his triumphs and joys. And even if the back towns of New Brunswick are of no interest to you, by the end of that conversation you’ll be so pumped up about it you’ll wonder why you’re thinking about planning your next family trip there.
I know we’ve heard it before but it’s because of its simplicity that we quickly forget. A smile is a powerful tool to help spread happiness through your day. And it makes you feel good too! Bill is a smiler. And you can’t help but smile back at him. Even if you’re the biggest grump-a-lump there is. And as the saying goes, “When you smile the whole world smiles with you.”
So thank you Bill. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me. And thank you for the happiness you bring to world.
Are you ready to unleash the Bill that’s hiding inside of you?
